Frequently Asked Question

Due to the large number of requests we receive, processing of your questions or orders may take several days. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

What does the test measure, what does it mean?

The Neurotoxic Metabolite Test aims at detecting the presence of specific metabolites in the urine. These metabolites are related to the production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Although H2S is naturally present in the body, and plays some normal physiological functions, an excess production can be very detrimental. Overproduction of H2S may result from metabolic dysfunctions, but also from the overgrowth of certain bacteria in the gut (alteration of the normal intestinal flora = gut dysbiosis). Our preliminary results indicate that a strong proportion of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis(CFS/ME) patients present such dysbiosis, and test positive with the NMT test; but positivity may be associated with other conditions, related to intestinal dysfunction

Is this kit recognized as a diagnostic kit?

NO. We are in the process of getting accreditation (CE mark) but this will take several months. Meanwhile, due to the strong need expressed by the patient community, we decided to make it available as a “research use only”. When signing the ordering forms, people who order the kit recognize that this is not a diagnostic kit. Because the kit is not officially approved we have to state that it is not intended to diagnose or prevent any disease.

Can medications/supplementations affect the result?

We have not yet completed all studies to find out the effects of medications on the test result. Since gut microflora is a major factor determining H2S production, it is very likely that antibiotic use, or concentrated probiotic consumption (but not the basic probiotics found in some dairy products), will have an effect on the test result. We have not yet studied the effect of pregnancy on the test result, but it is unlikely to affect the outcome of the test.

However, we certainly do not recommend that you stop a treatment which was prescribed by a health care provider. Just be aware that it may affect the test result, or wait until your treatment is finished before taking the test.

How many analyses can I do with one kit?

Each kit allows to do one analysis

What is the stability of the kit?

We will ship the kit at ambient temperature. Once it arrives, use it within a couple of days. For longer periods store it at 2-8°C (fridge), protected from light. In the fridge the kit will be stable for one month.

What are the next steps if I am positive?

The test is a first step in the characterization of your condition. Other more specific diagnostic tests can then be performed, that will lead to the definition of your treatment by a health care professional. Because the test is not yet officially approved we cannot make any claim regarding its medical interpretation. A health care practitioner (physician, dietician) will advise you on the next analysis that should be performed. If your health care practitioner has questions regarding the possible treatments, he may contact info@ehmb.be

How much does it cost, is there a discount if I order several kits?

The research test kit is sold for15€. VAT (21%) does apply in the European Union, leading to a total cost of 18,15€. Customers in other countries are responsible for paying local import taxes, if applicable. Shipping charges are also added : 8€ for European countries, 11€ for the rest of the World. This is a flat rate, independent from the number of kits ordered.

Today the kit cannot be reimbursed by social security systems.

There is no discount if you order several kits. The price of 15€ was kept as low as possible, it is not a commercial price; 15€ will just cover the reagent and the administrative costs. The idea was to make this “research kit” available to patients which are in need for help. Once the kit has been officially approved, pricing policy and its distribution system will change.

How can I order the kit, how do I pay?

Please refer to specific section of our website: “Ordering Test”.
